Abstract

1,143,059. Etching. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 19 Sept., 1967 [20 Sept., 1966], No. 42646/67. Heading B6J. Magnesium is etched with an etchant comprising: (A) nitric acid, (B) sulphonated monochlorododecyldiphenyl oxide, (C) a liquid organic mixture comprising (1) an aromatic naphtha and (2) an alkyl benzene branched chain hydrocarbon liquid, e.g. dodecyl benzene, and (D) water. After the etching each of a series of magnesium plates, there is added to the etchant a mixture of (a) petroleum sulphonate, (b) sodium monochlorododecyldiphenyl oxide disulphonate, and (c) an aromatic naphtha solvent. Additional optional ingredients are (i) an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, e.g. adipic acid, (ii) sulphuric acid, or sodium, magnesium, aluminium or ammonium sulphate, or sodium acid sulphate.
