Abstract

1,234,636. Etching. MASTER ETCHING MACHINE CO. Inc. 16 Sept., 1968, No. 43997/68. Heading B6J. Aluminium or aluminium alloy plates are masked and then etched with a solution comprising aqueous 30‹ to 40‹ BaumÚ ferric chloride, free hydrochloric acid, sulphated or sulphonated castor oil and a water-immiscible organic solvent. The castor oil acts as a film-forming agent for the sides of the relief images and inhibits undercutting thus providing high etch factors. The mixture of film-forming agent and solvent should constitute between 1 and 4À8% of the total volume of the bath, the sulphated or sulphonated castor oil being 0À08% to 1À6% and the organic solvent 0À8% to 3À2%, and specified solvents including kerosene, naphthalene and alkylbenzenes. The activity of the etching bath is maintained during etching by adding hydrochloric acid so that the solution contains 0À03% acid by volume and has a pH of approximately 1. The temperature is preferably between 60‹ and 90‹ F. A specific aluminium alloy contains 0À6% silicon, 0À25% copper, 1% magnesium and 0À25% chromium.
