Abstract

The oil is (i) mixed with a dilute aq. soln. of an alkali and an alkali(ne earth) metal or ammonium salt of an aryl or alkylaryl(monocyclic)-sulphonic acid contg. =3 alkyl gps. of =4C, (II) allowing to separate, and (iii) removing the aq. layer contg. free fatty acids from the oil. The mixt. contains 3-15 pref. 4-9 wt.% sulphonate. The mole ratio sulphonate to sopas present is 0.1-1.1 pref. 0.25-0.5:1. Teh lower concns. of sulphonate make discarding of the aqs. phase economical.
