Abstract
1,143,025. Welding by fusion. KABELUND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE A.G. 16 Nov., 1967 [13 April, 1967], No. 52162/67. Heading B3R. A plurality of spaced non-consumable electrodes 4 supported by a welding head which is both transverse horizontally and vertically adjustable relative to the workpiece 2, e.g., a strip metal tube or cable sheath having a longitudinal seam, are individually arranged for both transverse horizontal and vertical adjustment relative to the workpiece and each adapted for connection to a separate current supply to provide a separate arc. Each electrode 4, held in a brass member 7 mounted in a high thermal conductivity ceramic holder 5, is adjusted vertically by means of a screw 18 which moves the holder 5 in guides formed by a pivoted frame 14. The frame 14 allows horizontal adjustment of the electrodes by means of a screw 15 bearing on the frame against the action of a spring 17. The welding head is adjusted vertically by a screw 21 and horizontally by rotation about a fulcrum 22. Tubes 11, 12 supply cooling water to the electrode holder 5, and the tube 12, which is electrically connected to the brass member 7, connects the electrode with a current supply. A protective shield 8, which has observation windows (23) (Fig. 2, not shown), and provided with a lateral gas inlet 10 forms, with the gas e.g. argon, a complete shield round the weld and electrodes. The spacing between electrodes is controlled by the use of spacers, and the electrodes are introduced into the holders from below.
