Abstract
1,142,849. Tractor semi-trailer couplings. SELF ENERGISING DISC BRAKES Ltd. 16 May, 1966 [14 May, 1965], No. 20456/65. Heading B7T. [Also in Division F2] A tractor-semitrailer coupling comprises a king-pin carried by the semitrailer which engages a slot in a fifth wheel plate carried by the tractor (not shown), the fifth wheel plate being locked against rotation relative to the semitrailer and being normally rotatable relative to the tractor, and a brake having interengageable frictional surfaces and being operable to inhibit rotation of the fifth wheel plate relative to the tractor to prevent jack-knifing of the semitrailer and the tractor relative to one another. In an embodiment, a vertically spring-loaded locking peg 31 on the fifth wheel plate 27 engages a socket in the semitrailer. The plate 27 is mounted on a plate 26 rotatable about a pin 24 relative to a member 25 on the tractor, and the brake comprises friction linings 20, 22 engageable together by an annular piston 21 splined to the tractor member 25 and axially movable by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure progressively applied on braking via a pipe 18 from the braking system of the vehicle. In another embodiment, the locking peg is on the semitrailer and engages a recess on the plate 27. In a further embodiment, the locking peg is on a plate rotatable on the tractor and is movable by pivoted links to engage the fifth wheel plate and the semitrailer. In yet another embodiment, the locking peg is formed integrally with the king pin. In yet a further embodiment, the peg is horizontally spring loaded. In another embodiment, the fifth wheel plate is ball-bearing mounted on the tractor, a plurality of friction discs is provided, and the annular piston is sealed by 0-rings. In a further embodiment, a first plurality of friction discs are splined to a nut on the fifth wheel plate, and a second plurality interleaving with the first are bolted to a housing welded to the tractor.
