Abstract

1,075,802. Fifth-wheel couplings. F. J. C. HOPE. Aug. 26, 1964 [Aug. 29, 1963; Oct. 8, 1963; Oct. 28, 1963; Oct. 29, 1963; March 2, 1964], Nos. 34290/63, 39705/63, 42484/63, 42706/63 and 8750/64. Heading B7T. [Also in Division F2] A fifth wheel king pin 5, Fig. 1, which may be non-rotatably keyed by a plate 9 to a fifth wheel unit on a towing vehicle, Fig. 6 (not shown), is rotatably mounted in a block 3 on a trailer and has splined or keyed to it a braking disc 7 so that when the driver applies the tractor vehicle brakes the fluid (air) cylinder 12 is caused to rotate the lever 11 and the pads to clamp the disc 7 and prevent jack-knifing. In Fig. 7 (not shown) a multiple face plate clutch is provided some of which plates are splined to the pin. In Fig. 8 (not shown) a vertically movable brake ring (92) guided by splines (93) is pushed down by compressed air against a friction faced disc (90) fast with the king pin.
