Abstract

1,142,801. Nonwoven fabrics. AEROJETGENERAL CORP. 8 Feb., 1966, No. 5421/66. Heading D1R. A tape is made by aligning strands that have been covered or impregnated with a synthetic plastics material with adjacent strands disposed side by side, heating them so that the plastics material flows between adjacent, strands, and cooling so that the strands are stuck together by the plastics material. In one embodiment, a first portion of the strands has its strands aligned with gaps between them equal to the width of one strand, a second portion of the strands is treated similarly, and the two portions then brought together so that the strands of the second portion fit in the gaps between adjacent strands of the first portion. An apparatus for carrying out this process is described. The strand may be rovings of glass fibre, steel or titanium. The plastics material may be an epoxy resin.
