Abstract

A hydraulic vibrator comprises a reciprocating piston 17 controlling inlet and outlet parts 13, 14 in the cylinder 11, the connections to the working chambers 24, 25 being reversed as the piston passes its mid stroke position, and the effect of the pressure change in the chambers being delayed by accummulators connected to the chambers, so that the piston overshoots its mid stroke position and reciprocation is maintained. As shown, the accummulators comprise chambers on either side of a shuttle 32 which engages fixed stop 33 or adjustable stop 34 according to which working chamber is pressurized. Stop 34 is adjusted to adjust the frequency and hence amplitude of reciprocation. An adjustable restrictor also may be provided in the high pressure pipe 15 to control the frequency. The high and low pressure connections 15, 16 may be provided in the piston instead of the cylinder, passages 26, 27 then being in the cylinder. In the embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston extends from one end only of the cylinder and has one working frame of larger cross sectional area than the other, accummulators with a compressed gas volume being used. In the embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown), the piston does not extend from the cylinder and is of large mass, both the piston and cylinder end walls being curved. The vibrators may be used for operating a percussive tool, pile driver, shaker table or test piece.
