Apparatus for cleaning and disinfecting articles, e.g. mattresses, comprises an open framework 1 resiliently supported at 8, 9 and 10, capable of being vibrated by an -electric motor 12 -with an eccentrically loaded shaft and surrounded by a bellows-like -sealing frame 17 so that it effectively divides a chamber 13 into two parts 18 and 19. An electrically driven fan 21 sucks outside air through the filter 24 and forces the filtered air through a conduit system, by means of which it may be led into the chamber either through conduit 30 in the top of the chamber or through conduit 32 in the bottom (the other acting as an exhaust path). An electrically heated reservoir 56 of liquid disinfectant communicates with the conduit system for the addition to the air stream of the disinfectant (see Fig. 3, not shown). In operation, a mattress or the like is placed on the framework 1, the lid 16 is closed and the apparatus (which may be automatically programmed) is actuated and the motor 12 vibrates the framework 1. At the same time, air from the surrounding atmosphere flows through conduit 30 and through the mattress, carrying dust and dirt with it into the lower part 19 of the chamber. In the next phase, ingress of outside air is prevented, the disinfectant is heated and mingles with air circulating through the apparatus (and thus through the mattress). For completeness of disinfection, the direction of the air flow may be reversed. At the end of the disinfecting period, ambient air is again allowed to circulate to dry the mattress and remove traces of disinfectant.
