Abstract
1,141,885. Electron beam furnaces. LIBBEYOWENS-FORD GLASS CO. 24 May, 1966 [1 June, 1965], No. 23114/66. Heading H1D. A cable termination for supporting and supplying the voltages to the electrodes 34, 54, 84 of the electron gun within the vacuum enclosure of e.g. an electron beam furnace comprises a cup-shaped shield 46 surrounding the outermost insulating sleeve 22. The cable comprises an inner tubular conductor 10 connected to and supporting the gun focusing electrode 54, a second tubular conductor 14 separated from the first conductor by insulation 18 and connected by lead 76 to one end of the cathode 34 and a third outer conductor 26 surrounding the sleeve 22 and connected to and supporting a U-shaped conductive support for the accelerator electrode 84. An insulating bushing 100 is disposed about the insulating sleeve 22 and the shield 46 provides both shielding of the insulation against vapour deposition and, by virtue of the closeness of the spacing between the lower end of the shield and the flange 88 which is at ground potential, a high capacity shunt coupling for undesirable r.f. pick up. The inner conductor 10 may be provided as shown with a water-cooling arrangement. In further embodiments the termination is provided with tubular voltage gradient controlling conductive members between the insulating sleeve 22 and a smooth bushing 100 of cup-shaped form and between the bushing 100 and the shield 46 and voids within the structure are filled with high dielectric strength material such as silicon grease.
