Abstract

[Also in Division H2] A hoisting gear comprises a cable pulley secured to the shaft 3 of a worm-wheel 2 which is driven via a worm shaft 5 by an external rotor motor, the rotor 15 of the motor including a brake surface 16 adjacent to which are provided axial cooling air passages 23. The rotor incorporates an axially apertured cover 20 screwed at 21 to the worm-shaft and having ribs 20<SP>1</SP> forming a fan which impels air into the motor from the aperture. The air passing from the cover 20 divides to flow through passages 23 to cool the brake 16 and through passages 13<SP>1</SP> to cool the rotor laminations 13. The air from the passages 13<SP>1</SP> passes over the main worm-shaft bearing 7 and through an electrical cable box 27 before passing to atmosphere. A hand wheel 14 is provided integral with the cover 20 for manual operation of the hoisting gear in emergency. The brake surface 16 is acted upon by a twin jaw brake 17 actuated by a magnet 18. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the aperture in the ribbed rotor cover is closed and the cooling air is supplied to the motor by an independent fan and ducting leading to the motor. Passages (30) in the stator laminations facilitate cooling thereof and of the stator end coils (12<SP>1</SP>) (12<SP>11</SP>). The external surface of the hand wheel comprises the brake surface and cooling air passages are provided in the wall supporting the hand wheel on the rotor.
