A refuse incinerator having a burner unit 19 comprises a cylindrical grid assembly 8 rotatably mounted via rollers 12 within a casing formed by two coaxial cylinders 1 and 2 spaced apart to define an annular space 3 therebetween. One of the rollers is connected to a drive motor (not shown). The grid 8 comprises an annulus of tubes 9 wherein each tube has several radial branches 14 connected together by plates (15, Fig. 2) to define a continuous longitudinally extending helicoidal path. Refuse from a hopper 18 enters through a frusto conical section 16 having vanes 17 to direct the refuse into the incinerator, unburnt refuse being rejected through a section 21 into a hopper 20, and the ash passes through the grid 8 into a box 4. An extraction fan (not shown), connected to the box 4, induces air for combustion through an adjustable air flap 24 into the space 3 where it is distributed through apertures (25, 34, Fig. 3) to the box 4 and to the grid 8 respectively. Additional air is induced through apertures 22, 23 into the tubes 9 and out through the branches 14 into the refuse bed. In an alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the grid tubes 9 are joined together via perforated refractory metal elements 41. Radial blades 42 of similar material are attached to the tubes. Combustion products exit into a chimney 52 mounting an extraction fan via a chamber 50 which contains catalyst elements 51. A push-rod assembly (56, Fig. 4) forces refuse from a hopper (57) into the grid 8.
