Abstract

1,141,398. Two-stroke I. C. engines; valves. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. Nov. 29, 1967 [Dec.6, 1966], No.54464/66. Heading F1B. In a two-stroke I. C. engine the cylinder head 3 has a cylindrical portion extending along the cylinder bore 2 with an annular space therebetween receiving a sleeve valve 11, e. g. of steel, extending into the bore above the swept portion. At least one sleeve port 14 controls at least one inlet passage 15. One or more exhaust ports 11 are controlled by the piston 5. The sleeve valve 11 may be rotated from the crank-shaft at half crank-shaft speed by a two part shaft, one part having helical splines and the other axial splines coupled by a splined sleeve axially movable to vary the inlet timing. A portion of the cylinder head may be axially movable to vary the compression ratio. The inlet passages 15 may be tangentially arranged to promote swirl of the incoming gases. The exhaust ports may extend over substantially the complete circumference of the cylinder, their continuity being broken only by guide bars for the piston rings. Dimensions of the exhaust and inlet ports are given for an engine with a bore to stroke ratio of 1:1.
