Abstract

1,140,753. Friction brakes; dampers. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 15 Sept., 1966 [28 Sept., 1965], No. 41208/66. Headings F2E and F2S. [Also in Division G6] A system for braking a movable mass 1 comprises a guide element 2 and a braking part 6, rubbing members 10 for engaging the braking part, first resilient means 12 to urge the rubbing members into contact with the braking part and second resilient means 14 by which the rubbing members are coupled to the mass, the second resilient means, upon relative movement of the mass and the rubbing members induced by engagement of the latter with the braking part, being compressed to provide a further loading of the rubbing members on to the braking part. As shown the moving mass comprises e.g. a cylindrical control rod 1 movable at high speed in a nuclear reactor core 3, and the guide element comprises a rigid rod 2 which is secured to a stationary structure 3 and which has an upper zone 4, which allows unimpeded movement of the control rod 1, a wider lower braking zone 6, and a frusto-conical transition zone 7. The brake is housed in a easing 8 carried by the lower end of the control rod and includes braking elements in the form of cylindrical sectors 10 disposed around the rod 2. The sectors 10 are connected, adjacent their upper ends, by circlips 12, a stack 14 of ring springs 18, 19 with coacting conical surfaces being interposed between shoulders 16 on the lower ends of the sectors 10 and the base 15 of the control rod 1. The rings 18 are continuous, the rings 19 being split at 20. When the control rod 1 falls the brake sectors 10 pass freely over the upper zone 4 of the rod 2 to impinge upon the transition zone 7 and slow down the control rod 1. The momentum of the control rod 1 then imposes an axial compression force upon the stack of springs 18, 19, the rings 19 being radially contracted to force the sectors 10 into heavy clamping engagement with the lower zone 6, of the rod 2 so that the control rod is stopped rapidly. It is stated that braking forces, varying between 1 ton and 4 tons, or even more, have proved possible. The system could also be used with a mass driven, e.g. by an explosive charge, along a horizontal passage. In a modification the system may be used to brake a solid cylindrical mass in a hollow cylindrical guide element.
