[Also in Division G6] A device for braking falling objects comprises a cylindrical sleeve element made of easily deformable metal into which is insertable by deformation of the sleeve a cylindrical element, the outside diameter of which is greater than the inside diameter of the sleeve, one of the elements being movable in response to the dropping of an object and the other being fixed. The cylindrical element may be constructed on the object or separately therefrom. As shown, the sleeve comprises tubular elements 1, 1<SP>1</SP> of light metal, e.g. aluminium fixed to liners 2, 3 also of light metal and is inserted in a nuclear reactor casing 4 which rests upon a flange 5 capping a pointed foot 6 supported by the structure of the reactor. The upper part 1a of the element 1 is flared to receive the lower end of the control rod 7 which has a conical chamfer 8. If the suspension means of the control rod 7 should break, the latter would first engage the flared part 1a and then drive into the element 1, pushing out its sides until the work performed had dissipated its kinetic energy.
