891,525. Energy absorbing devices. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. March 26, 1959 [April 19, 1958], No. 12321/58. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] An energy absorbing device for arresting a falling body comprises crumpling means in the form of at least one roll of dimpled sheet, the roll being arranged to crumple in the direction of its axis, on impact. As shown, in Fig. 1, the lower end of a nuclear reactor control rod 1 slides within a casing 2 to which it is attached by a pin 3 co-operating with a casing slot 4, the roll of dimpled sheet 5 extending between the rod 1 and the casing end cap 7. Thus should the rod 1 be dropped, its energy will be absorbed by crumpling of the roll 5. In another construction (Fig. 2, not shown) a device for supporting fuel elements in a reactor core channel includes a plunger interposed between the bottom of the fuel element stack and the upper end of a roll of dimpled sheet, the roll being disposed within a casing in which the plunger slides when subjected to an impact. Fig. 3 shows a typical roll of dimpled sheet which may be mild or stainless steel. The Provisional Specification describes with reference to drawings energy absorbing devices including metal cones which crumple under impact.
