Abstract

1,140,674. Reinforced rubbery polymer compositions in solution. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 21 Feb., 1966 [9 March, 1965], No. 9837/65. Heading C3P. Compositions comprise (a) a rubbery polymer, (b) a resinous reinforcing material which is polystyrene or a styrene/conjugated diene polymer containing at least 75% by weight of styrene, and (c) an organic solvent. They may be obtained (i) by dissolving each polymer separately in miscible solvent batches and subsequently mixing, or (ii) by dissolving both polymers in the same batch of solvent. Other ingredients may be vulcanization accelerators, free-radical curing agents, antioxidants, antiozonants, extender and processing oils, and emulsifying agents, e.g. the potassium salt of abietic and dehydrocaseinic acids. The reinforced compositions may be formed into films. The rubbery polymers may be any natural or synthetic rubber. Suitable solvents are hexane, n-decane, cyclohexane, benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, chlorobenzene and methylene chloride. In the examples: (1) polystyrene and a 96% cis-1,4-polybutadiene are blended in the same batch of methylene chloride and, after emulsification, blended with vulcanization ingredients, formed into a film and cured, and (2) a 96% cis-1,4-polybutadiene and an 85/15 styrene/butadiene copolymer are dissolved in separate batches of methylene chloride and the solutions mixed, followed by the same steps as in (1).
