Abstract

1,140,572. Endless conveyers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 3 May, 1967 [14 March, 1966], No. 11078/66. Heading B8A. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for inspecting containers comprises means to move a succession of containers to an inspection station and there rotate them about an axis, means directing radiation through the container normal to the axis and means responsive to a predetermined reduction in intensity of radiation received to indicate the presence of a flaw or foreign body in the container. Bottles to be inspected are deflected from a first conveyer to an inspection device comprising eight chucks 31, Fig. 3, mounted on a pair of endless chains 27. Each chuck comprises a plate 55, Fig. 4, and a locking ring 59 to which four chuck jaws 61 are pivotally connected. The chuck is mounted in a ball race 47 for rotation relative to the chuck carriage 41. At station A rotation is prevented by a bar co-operating with posts 53A, 53B and jaws 37 pull the arms 69 downwards so that jaws 61 grip the bottle. At station B, the chuck is rotated by a spur gear engaging a gear on the chuck while the bottle is inspected photoelectrically (see Division G1). If the bottle is defective it is released at station C by jaws similar to jaws 67 opening the chuck and falls into a reject shoot. If the bottle is acceptable it is released at station D and passes to a second conveyer or is returned to the first conveyer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,075,152.
