Abstract

1,140,452. Rotary vacuum-pumps. EDWARDS HIGH VACUUM INTERNATIONAL Ltd. March 10, 1967 [March 16, 19661, No.11533/66. Heading F1F. In a rotary vacuum-pump of the outwardlysliding radial-vane type, noise generated by compression of sealing liquid e.g. oil, 8, Fig. 1, in and adjacent to an outlet duct 7 is suppressed by a ring 10 that is lodged in the wall of said duct and made of resilient pressure-energy absorbing material, e.g. foamed rubber or synthetic plastics material. The duct 7 is controlled by a valve comprising a flexible flap 5 that is clamped against the body 1 of the pump by a rigid plate 6 and made of either a synthetic plastics material or an elastomeric one; and, alternatively, said noise may be suppressed by air in a closed pocket (11), Fig. 2 (not shown), which is formed within said flap in register with said duct, the ring 10 being dispensed with. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the noise aforesaid is suppresed by air within a recess 13 that is formed in the plate 6 in alignment with a similar recess within the body of the pump, the latter recess being separated from the former one by the flap 5 and connected to the duct 7 by a passage 14. Atmospheric air enters the recess 13 through a pipe 15. In each embodiment, the pump is sealed by being immersed in oil 2.
