Abstract

1,140,192. Pure fluid amplifiers. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Feb.7, 1966 [Feb. 16, 1965], No. 5286/66. Heading G3H. A pure fluid amplifier which may be used as a timer comprises a bi-stable amplifier 10 having an input power jet 11, outputs 16, 18 and control signal inputs 20, 22. The control signals are applied after predetermined time intervals to switch the jet from one outlet to the other by valves 24, 26. The valve 24 comprises a two stage valve having chambers 28, 30 and 34, 36 each separated by diaphragms 32, 38 and the chamber 30, 34 separated by a wall with an orifice 40. Chambers 30, 36 have ports 44, 46 open to the atmosphere, chamber 28 is connected to a passage 50 leading from outlet pipe 84 and chamber 34 is also connected to passage 50 through a needle valve 54. In operation, assuming that the jet 11 locks on to the outlet 16, an output signal passes to passages 48, 84. Part of the outlet signal flows through pipe 50 to chamber 28 and a small flow passes through the valve 54 to chamber 34. The fluid in chamber 34 flows through orifice 40 and outlet 44 of chamber 30 until the pressure in chamber 28 is sufficient to cause diaphragm 32 to seat on orifice 40. The restricted flow through valve 54 to chamber 34 causes a build up in pressure until the diaphragm 38 closes the end of passage 42 leading to the control nozzle 22. The flow of the main jet to outlet 16 which has previously entrained fluid through port 46, chamber 36 and passage 42 now causes a pressure gradient across the jet to switch it to outlet 76. The pressure in passage 50 is now released and the valve 24 reset while the flow in 76, 86 acts on valve 26. Thus the jet 11 is switched between the outlets after a time interval determined by the needle valves 54, 82 in conjunction with valves 24, 26.
