Abstract
1,140,108. Stabilized base oils. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 25 July, 1966 [26 July, 1965], No. 33360/66. Heading C5F. The stability of a base oil (which contains none of the additives used to form lubricating oil compositions) is improved by the addition of sodium naphthenate in a quantity equivalent to 0À0001-0À01% by weight of NaOH. The base oil is preferably a mineral oil having the viscosity of a lubricating oil. Sodium naphthenate (M.W. 250-600) may be obtained from the spindle oil-heavy distillate fraction of a lubricating oil distillate. Asphaltene impurities may be removed from the sodium naphthenate by washing with alcohol or by acidification, washing with water and filtering over earth.
