Abstract

1,140,074. Analogue to digital converters. JAPAN ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE. 11 March, 1966 [12 March, 1965 (2)], No. 10708/66. Heading G4H. In an analogue - to - digital converter system of the type comprising a digital part 10, Fig. 3, for generating a feed-back balance voltage for comparison at 11 with the input voltage the comparator output serving to control the digital part so as to achieve a balance, the feed-back voltage has added to it a small auxiliary voltage and this is compared with the input at 31 and the comparator output is used to control the value in the digital part 10. If the value arrived at is "8" the feed-back voltage 41, Fig. 4, is just less than the input voltage 40. This auxiliary voltage #v when added to the voltage 41 exceeds the input 40. The output from comparator 31 is then effective to cause the value to step down to "7" and the process repeats, the input 40 being still less than the combined signal. When the value is stepped down again to "6" the input exceeds the combined signal. The value is then restored to "7" and this is read out to the output store 32. Instead of using two comparators 11 and 31 a single comparator may be used, switched first to balance the feed-back voltage and then to compare the input with the feed-back voltage increased by the auxiliary voltage. The auxiliary voltage, in another form, is alternating. In the form of Fig. 9 (not shown) the input voltage is applied to a chain of comparators having successively lower reference signals derived from a potentiometer. A logic circuit identifies the comparator with the highest reference voltage exceeded by the input. The auxiliary voltage is added or subtracted from the input voltage when the switch is changed over. The auxiliary voltage may be alternating in this form also. The auxiliary voltage defines an amplitude range and determines the channel to which a signal corresponding to any input signal shall be applied. The apparatus is for analysing the amplitudes of pulses derived from a nuclear detector, a pulse being sent to one of a number of counters according to the amplitude range of the pulse.
