Abstract

1,139,735. Measuring movements of rules. FEINMESS DRESDEN VEB. 7 March, 1966, No. 9907/66. Heading G4H. Increments of movement of a rule 1 (Fig. 1) are detected by photo-diodes 20, 21, 28, 29 which are positioned above line divisions of the rule so as to be able to detect the direction of movement of the rule and apply pulses through one of two AND gates 37, 38 to a counter. A further photodiode 10 starts a fine count when it reads a starting index on a rotating disc, the output pulses from a photodiode 12 reading interpolation graduations on the disc being then counted until a line division coincides with a spiral serving as a stopping index is read by a photodiode 11. The apparatus may be used for the control of a machine tool by presetting the counters to count up to the required position.
