Abstract
1,139,383. Epoxy resin-vinyl chloride copolymer compositions. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 26 May, 1967, No. 24504/67. Headings C3B and C3P. [Also in Division B2] A coating composition comprises a mixture of 5-90% by weight of an epoxy resin with 95- 10% of a copolymer containing 50-98% by weight of vinyl chloride and 2-50% of comonomers containing at least one hydroxy group or group hydrolysable to a hydroxy group and a curing agent for the epoxy resin; the epoxy resin is defined as being other than a monomeric polyepoxide having at least two cyclohexene oxide groups, but is otherwise conventional, as is the curing agent. In the examples a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol is used and the curing agent is silicon tetrafluoride, or a carboxylic acid anhydride optionally mixed with a quaternary ammonium halide, while the copolymer is vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate or a partially hydrolysed derivative. The mixtures are dissolved in tetrahydrofuran or 2-butanone and used to coat polyethylene, glass or steel, the coatings being baked after the solvent has evaporated.
