Abstract

1,139,346. Magnetic structures. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 23793/66. Heading H1H. A magnetic recording tape comprises a base of polyethylene terephthalate containing 0À25- 0À75% by wt. of inert non-magnetic particles of average size 0À1-2Á, coated with a layer containing magnetic particles. The inert particles may be TiO 2 or china clay, and may be ball milled with ethylene glycol and added to the ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate used to prepare the polymer. The base may be orientated by stretching in one or both directions in the plane of the film, and heat set under tension at 150-200‹ C. The magnetic particles may be Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 or Cr oxide, and may be held in a binder of cellulose acetate or nitrate, polyvinyl acetate or butyral, or a copolymer of vinylidene with acrylonitrile or vinyl chloride or acetate. There may be an intermediate adhesive layer.
