Abstract

1,139,003. Washing machines. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 4 Feb., 1966 [9 Feb., 1965], No. 5012/66. Heading D1A. A washing machine comprises a first timing circuit determining the number of rinsing cycles, a second timing circuit determining the period of a washing and rinsing cycle respectively, and a temperature-controlled switching circuit coupled to the second timing circuit, the arrangement being such that upon starting the washing programme a capacitor of the first timing circuit is connected to a D.C. supply, this timing circuit thereby closing a switch in series with the tub-filling means, and at the end of the washing cycle the D.C. supply to said capacitor is interrupted, whereby said switch is opened after a period determined by the first timing circuit. As shown, timing circuits 48 and 88 are energised when a main switch 2 is closed, whereby a relay 62 in circuit 48 is de-energised to maintain a switch 20 in the circuit of the tub-filling valve 3 open, and a relay 99 in circuit 88 is de-energised to maintain a switch 21, 82 in the full-line position. The tub-emptying pump 26 thereby operates until a switch 164 in a level control 19 engages a contact 32. A capacitor 87 is thereby charged, through resistors 79, 85 and a diode 80, to a predetermined value such that relay 99 is energised to shift switch 21 to the dotted-tine position. Pump 26 is thereby connected to the supply via a lamp 23 and a light-sensitive resistor 24, and therefore stops. To initiate the washing programme, a starting switch 22 is closed to short-circuit resistor 24. Lamp 23 thereby lights and illuminates resistor 24, the resistance of which falls sufficiently to maintain illumination of lamp 23 when switch 22 is released. A light-sensitive resistor 72 is also illuminated to energise a switching circuit 65, whereby capacitor 87 is charged via a diode 76. A lightsensitive resistor 45 is illuminated to initiate charging of a capacitor 46, whereby relay 62 is energised for closing switch 20, and a lightsensitive resistor 60, in series with a lightsensitive resistor 61 shunting relay 62, is also illuminated. Valve 3 is thereby opened and the tub fills to a predetermined low level, when switch 164 is transferred to a contact L for energising lamps 4, 7 and a tub heater 8. Lamp 4 illuminates resistor 61, whereby relay 62 is de-energised to open switch 20, and lamp 7 illuminates a light-sensitive resistor 18 for starting the washing motor 10. When the tub temperature rises to a value determined by a heat-sensitive resistor 66 and a voltage divider in circuit 65, charging of capacitor 87 via diode 76 ceases. Capacitor 87 then discharges through a resistor 86, whereby, after a predetermined period, relay 99 is de-energised to position switch 21 in the full-line position. Pump 26 thereby operates, while lamp 26 is extinguished and cannot be re-lit until switch 22 is again actuated. Capacitors 46 also begins to discharge slowly through a resistor 47, and circuit 65 is permanently de-energised. Capacitor 87 is again charged, via resistors 79. 85 and diode 80, to energise relay 99 for shifting switch 21 to the dotted-line position. Capacitor 87 then begins to discharge through resistor 88, and valve 3 opens. When switch 164 shifts to contact L. heater 8 and motor 10 are energised, but relay 62 is not de-energised, owing to the high resistance of resistor 60, until the tub fills to a predetermined high level for shifting a switch 63 of the level control 19 to a contact H. Switch 20 then opens, and rinsing continues until the charge on capacitor 87 is sufficiently reduced to cause deenergisation of relay 99. The rinsing cycle is repeated until the charge on capacitor 42 is sufficiently reduced to cause de-energisation of relay 62 and permanent opening of switch 20. Opening of a switch 9 in series with lamp 4 ensures that the tub is filled to the high level for the washing cycle also. Shifting of a switch 59 to contacts 36, 37 connects relay 62 in series with resistor 60, whereby relay 62 connot be energised after completion of the washing cycle, when lamp 23 is extinguished, and thus no rinsing cycle follows the washing cycle. Modified circuits are also described.
