Abstract

1,138,935. Preventing explosions. EDELEANU G.m.b.H. 17 March, 1967 [28 May, 1966], No. 12599/67. Heading ASA. A method with minimal explosion risk of filling a tanker with a fuel having a boiling range above or extending above that of gasoline, and having an upper explosion point above the temperature at which the filling is effected, comprises introducing into the tanker a normally gaseous hydrocarbon either as such or in liquefied form to give in the tanker before the fuel filling operation is started, a concentration of hydrocarbon vapour which, in the mixture of hydrocarbon vapour and air formed in the tanker, is above the upper explosive limit, and withdrawing the said mixture from the tanker in accordance with the increase in volume of the fuel as the latter is fed in. The normally gaseous hydrocarbon may be butane or propane.
