Abstract

[Also in Division C6] The grain surface of leather or leatherlike materials (e.g. that known under the Registered Trade Mark "CORFAM"), e.g. in the toe portions of shoe uppers, is sprayed with hot moist air or steam immediately before and/or as the material is stretched. The word "immediately" means stretching within 5 seconds of the finish of the gas treatment or before the grain surface has fallen to below 45‹C. A suitable steam spraying device which may be incorporated into a conventional lasting machine, may comprise a metal block 12, having a recess 14, which has an inlet 18 tangential thereto, for steam from a source not shown via pipe 24, and a nozzle 26 mounted in recess 14 and having an outlet 28 for the steam. In recess 14 the large water droplets are removed from the steam. A valve may be present to control the flow of steam through outlet 28. In one embodiment the valve 36 comprises member 38 normally held by spring 50 in a closed position. When compressed air is passed via pipe 42 into chamber 40 the member 38 is retracted such that steam issues from outlet 28. In another embodiment the valve may be operated by means of a solenoid. Thermostatically controlled heaters 58 may be present to prevent condensation. An annular chamber 68 (Fig. 3, not shown) may extend from end 16 and surround nozzle 26 such that hot air may be blown on to the leather. The hot air is supplied to the annular chamber by a tube tangential thereto.
