Abstract

540,332. Finishing shoes. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. April 11, 1940, No. 6536. Convention date, April 12, 1939. [Class 17 (i)] Folds and wrinkles are removed from shoe uppers by hot moist air. The nozzle from which the air is directed on the work may function as an iron, or may be formed to direct convergent streams of air on either side of a fold or wrinkle. Air is forced through a pipe 26 under the control of a valve 62 the stem of which carries an arm 60 actuating an electric switch in a circuit supplying a heater 30 surrounding the air passage and readily replaceable. The air, at between 250‹ and 400‹F. is delivered to a nozzle 67 having a convex ironing face grooved to allow the escape of the air. Water enters the air stream by an opening 44 at a constriction in the air passage. A modified nozzle is bifurcated and formed with curved deflectors 80 to guide the air to the two sides of a fold W.
