Abstract
1,137,881. Steering by braking. RANSOMES SIMS & JEFFERIES Ltd. 10 March, 1966 [18 March, 1965], No. 11540/65. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] First and second brake pedals 5, 7 which operate brakes effective on respective wheels on opposite sides of a vehicle may be operated together by a third pedal 37 having a compensating lever 33 pivoted to the lever arm 27 thereof and engaging the arms of the levers 9, 13 of the first and second pedals, the third pedal 37 being movable from a first position shown in broken lines, wherein it masks the pedals 5 and 7 from access by the driver's feet, to a second position shown in full lines, in which the pedals 5 and 7 are readily accessible. The pedal 37 has a pin or rib which engages in a slot 55 or a slot at right angles thereto in either of the positions selected. To maintain the pedal 37, 27 depressed to act as a parking brake a pawl (89, Fig. 1, not shown) on the arm 27 engages teeth on a ratchet plate 84 when a lever 61 swings the plate into the appropriate position. Reverse movement of the lever 61 releases the pawl and the pedal. An overcentre action spring 83 maintains the ratchet in either position selected by the lever 61.
