Abstract
1,137,810. Conductive glass for ceramic and metal seals. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 8 June, 1967 [16 June, 1966; 8 July, 1966], No. 26495/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Division B3] A conductive glass for joining ceramic to metal has a major portion consisting, apart from the inclusion of a binder, only of pulverulent glass and copper, and a minor portion consisting of an element which alloys with the copper, forms with the glass and copper a mixture which fuses and bonds to metal and ceramic materials at between 1500‹ F. and 1600‹ F. and at such temperature causes the release of a volatile constituent from the glass. Zinc, manganese and silicon are given as the element. The mixtures in weight percentages are as follows: glass 25-35; copper 40-60; zinc or manganese 10-30 and glass 25-40; copper 50-65; silicon 2-10. A borosilicate glass is used, preferably SiO 2 65; B 2 O 3 23; Al 2 O 3 5; Na 2 O 7. A small amount of binder may be used and suggested binders are hydrogenated cottonseed oil, carboxyl methyl cellulose, wax and dextrine. A spark plug with ceramic insulation, metal centre electrode and terminal screw members bonded by the mixture, is described.
