Abstract

1,137,735. Ball joints. BURMAN & SONS, Ltd. 2 Feb., 1967 [24 Feb., 1966], No. 8127/66. Heading E2F. In a ball joint wherein a ball ended component engages in a part-spherical recess in another component, the ball ended component comprises a metal rod 11 ending in a partspherical portion 13 which has a co-axial cylindrical recess 14 in its end face. A compression spring 15 is located in the recess, with its outer end abutting the flat inner face of a pad 16, suitably of synthetic resin material. The part spherical outer face of the pad is maintained wholly engaged in a corresponding surface in a retaining cap 17 by the outward pressure of the spring 15. The part-spherical recess in which the ball is engaged may be formed in a synthetic resin insert 12, and the part-spherical portion 13 of the ball may either be integral with the rod 11, or formed as a synthetic resin moulding on a cylindrical end portion of the rod. A sealing boot 19, suitably of rubber, may enclose the joint.
