Abstract

1463805 Ball and socket joints AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 31 Jan 1974 [5 Feb 1973 27 July 1973] 5638/73 and 35966/73 Heading E2F A ball and socket joint suitable for use in vehicle steering and suspension systems, has its ball 16 received within a resilient one-piece bearing member 17 in the socket 12, and the ball is retained in the socket by deforming the open-ended socket wall portion 24 around the ball with the bearing member 17 compressed therebetween. The bearing member 17 is preferably plastics and the wall portion 24 is of a generally cylindrical configuration before compression. The wall of the bearing member may be tapered or its surfaces profiled, and its internal surface may be provided with lubricating channels (51), Fig. 11 (not shown). The socket wall portion 12 is cylindrical before deformation, and following deformation the aperture defined at the open end of the socket is oval in shape. The external surface of the socket may be provided with an endless circumferential groove (44), Fig. 5 (not shown) within which is received the end of a resilient boot (45).
