Abstract

1371903 Pin and socket joints AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 5 May 1972 [27 May 1971] 16677/71 Addition to 1026004 Heading E2F In a pin and socket joint for use in the steering linkage of a motor vehicle, split bearing members 25, 26 are interposed between the pin 14 and the socket 10 of the joint, each of the split bearing members having a cylindrical surface 29 engaging a cylindrical surface 16 on the pin 14 and a part-spherical bearing surface 17 engaging a complementary surface on the pin 14. The two part-spherical bearing surfaces 17 have their centres of curvature shown at 18 and spaced apart along the axis of the pin 14. The assembly is held in place by a coiled compression spring 32 which is compressed between a washer 31 and a closure plate 33 held in place by an inwardly arranged rim 34 at the end of the socket 10. Provision is made for supplying grease through a nipple (not shown) in the wall of the socket into the gap surrounding the groove 24 in the joint pin 14.
