Abstract

1,193,377. Ball and socket joints. KARL SOHMIDT G.m.b.H. 4 March, 1968 [15 March, 1967],. No. 10432/68. Heading E2F.. A ball and socket joint comprises a ball headed shaft, a socket 4 and a one-piece bearing shall 1, interposed between the ball head and the socket interior, which is approximately spherical but deviating therefrom in some regions such that in some regions it closely engages the ball head but in other regions is spaced therefrom to provide a resilient suppoirt between 'the ball head and the socket interior. As shown in Fig. 1, the bearing shell may be formed with incisions 2 radiating away from the upper pole giving rise to the formation of prongs or teeth 3 centrically converging towards the pole and having a radius of curvature less than that of the other regions of the shell. The prongs of the shell may overlap in the equatorial region of the shell. The bearing shell may be made of spring steel and may be provided internally with a sliding 'layer of metal or plastics.
