Abstract

1,137,685. Cathode-ray tubes. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. 5 April, 1966 [27 April, 1965], No. 15208/66. Heading H1D. The first dynode of the electron multiplier in an image orthicon has the beam limiting aperture 32 facing the cathode 40 flared as shown, and coated with secondary electron inhibiting material, e.g. colloidal graphite or a carbon compound such as petroleum lubricating oil or grease, or a metal such as chromium, palladium or gold. Carbonates or oxides, e.g. of barium, strontium and calcium, emitted from the cathode 40 may react with a coating of organic material to produce a compound having a relatively low secondary emission ratio. The organic material may be applied by brushing or by causing the material to flow through the aperture 32 in liquid form under a differential pressure. Preferably the coating is porous; the coating of organic material may be rendered porous by sand-blasting. The coating thickness is at least about 200 Angstroms. The secondary emissive coating 38 of the dynode is a thin coating, e.g. about 100 Angstroms thick, of magnesium oxide. The surface of the nickel substrate 36 is highly smooth and this is accomplished by using a plating bath consisting of nickel sulphamate, boric acid and nickel chloride in de-ionized water.
