Milking apparatus comprises a milk receiving container 11 which is coupled to a vacuum line 23 when receiving milk from the teat cups and to a pressure line 21 under a greater than atmospheric pressure, to effect discharge of milk from the container to milk transport line 19. The vacuum line 23 is connected to an exhauster 24 communicating with the atmosphere through a filter 45. The pressure line 21 is connected to an oil-less compressor 22 and is provided with two-way valves 41, 42 connectable with the upper and lower ends respectively of a hot water cylinder 43. The milk transport line 19 includes a two-way valve whereby the milk can be delivered to churns 31 via a cooling apparatus 30 or alternatively liquid in line 19 can be delivered to a number of outlets located over a sink. For the purpose of washing the apparatus the teat cups are removed from conduit 15 and are connected to the outlets in line 19 located over the sink, line 19 being put into communication with the outlets. Valves 41, 42 are operated so that increased pressure acts on cylinder 43 to force hot water into line 21, through jar 11, along line 19 and out through the teat cups. By putting line 19 into communication therewith, the cooling apparatus may also be washed. A venturi device coupled to a source of dilute nitric acid or a detergent may be located between the outlet of cylinder 43 and valve 42. Container 11 may be in the form of a calibrated glass jar.
