A milk releaser 14 has a side wall formed as a flap valve 16 and is connected at 15 to a vacuum vessel 6 and vacuum line 7 and to a milk line 12, the connection 15 having a smaller diameter than the liquid inlet and the arrangement being such that suction is continuously applied at 15 and that liquid flows into the releaser until a level is reached such that the closing affect of atmospheric pressure on flap 16 is overcome. For washing purposes the milk line 12 is connected to a pulsator 22, outlet pipe 17 from the releaser is sealed and the teat cups 8 are immersed in washing liquid contained in tank 26. The liquid is sucked through pipeline 12 into the releaser and rises to constriction 30 so causing a rise in pressure in releaser 14 to atmospheric pressure thereby allowing flap valve 16 to open and washing liquid to discharge into tank 26. Some washing liquid may pass into vessel 6 but is prevented from reaching the pump 1 by float 31. During milking pipeline 12 is disconnected from pulsator 22 and closed by cap 20 and outlet 17 is connected to the first of a series of churns, the last churn being connected by a further pipeline 19 to the vacuum vessel.
