Abstract

1,137,554. Building component; radiation shelter. GLASSWALL PROJECTS Ltd. 20 Dec., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965], No. 40017/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division G6] A building component, providing protection from electromagnetic radiation, is produced by moulding a paste or powder of a compound containing lead with an animal or vegetable oil or an epoxy resin as filler and/or binder under pressure, and heating before, during or after moulding. Pressure is preferably maintained until the material has cooled to not greater than #50‹ C. The paste preferably comprises a lead oxide, e.g. PbO, Pb 2 O 3 or Pb 3 O 4 or lead tungstate with an animal or vegetable oil or with the epoxy resin and hardener therefor and may be moulded e.g. at room temperature and may then be heated to a high temperature e.g. 100-200‹ C. for a few hours or to #700‹ C. until it reaches a uniform temperature throughout. Mixing and/or moulding is preferably effected in vacuo and the pressure may be up to 30 tonnes/cm.<SP>2</SP> for up to 24 hours.
