Abstract

1,137,547. Hardening gelatine. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 29 April, 1966 [3 May, 1965], No. 18821/66. Heading C3H. [Also in Division G2] Gelatine is hardened by incorporating an aldehyde or dihydroxydioxane and a watersoluble salt of an acid containing only C, H and O atoms and containing not more than 10 carbon atoms, for example, carbonic acid or formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, caprylic, oxalic, malonic, adipic, benzoic or phthalic acid. Alkali - metal, alkaline - earth metal, ammonium or amine salts may be used. Hardeners specified are formaldehyde, mucochloric acid, dialdehyde starch, dihydroxydioxane, glutaraldehyde and dialdehyde plant gums. The gelatine may be mixed with other polymers such as alkyl acrylate-acrylic acid copolymer and may form the binder for a photographic silver halide emulsion.
