Abstract
1,137,528. Moulding refractory material. OGLEBAY NORTON CO. 3 Oct., 1966 [11 Oct., 1965], No. 44140/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B3] A hot top structure for a big-end-down ingot mould 10 comprises panels 12, 13, 14 and 15 of a refractory insulating material and wedging corner pieces 16, 17, 18 and 19, the panels being supported on the top of the mould 10 by hanger means 25, 26 comprising pivoting supports 33 that can be retracted into recesses 43 and contained in the thickness of the panel for storage and transportation, and can be pivoted outwards to engage the top of the mould 10 in an operative position. A lower part 32a of the supports extends outwards of the panel to bias the bottom edge of the panel against the inside of the mould 10 to prevent molten metal passing between the panel and the mould (Fig. 2, not shown). If the panels are required to be lower in the mould then additional hangers may extend from the hanger means 25, 26 to the top 10a of the mould 10. The hanger means 25, 26 comprise a pin (30), (Fig. 6, not shown), about which the supports are formed and which is moulded within the material of the panels during manufacture. Fig. 5 (not shown), indicates a vacuum box apparatus for manufacturing the panels. The slurry of the refractory material is placed on a screen 51 having mounted thereon an insert 60 and the pivoting supports 33 and a vacuum 52 is generated to draw the liquid from the slurry to form solidified panels.
