Regulating.-For the purpose of preventing pulsations, a centrifugal compressor with a constantvolume governor is provided with a by-pass conduit 19 fitted with a valve 23 biased by an adjustable weight 28 to the closing position. The valve is opened when the discharge pressure rises above the value for which the weight 28 is set. Pulsations are stated to occur when the load coefficient, which is equal to the volume divided by the square-root of the pressure, reaches or falls below a critical value for a given machine, which is determinable by experiment. The bar 25 on which the weight 28 is carried is graduated to enable this weight to be set in the position corresponding to the position of the weight 16 of the volume governor. The volume governor, which, in conjunction with a speed governor 18, controls the admission valve 9 of the turbine driving the compression, is of usual construction.
