Abstract

[Also in Division A4] The overlapped ends U, L of a thermoplastic strap encircling a package are friction-fused together in a joint J by melting thin abutted surface layers by sliding frictional movement under pressure and maintaining the ends under pressure until resolidification of an inter face layer takes place. The strap is preferably of nylon 6-6 or of isotactic polypropylene which may be blended with copolymers of propylene and ethylene, the ends of the strap being compressed between a pair of jaws, one of which may be knurled. The strap is moved in a onedirection travel stroke either drawn between stationary jaws or moved by one movable jaw, or moved in a reciprocated travel stroke by a movable jaw. The knurled jaw imprints the fused interface layer thus providing different thickness therein with greater mechanical interlock and in a modification curved joint edge profiles between the fused layer and the strap determined by the contact faces of the jaws provide greater strength in the joint. A tab 28 left on the end L facilitates stripping of the joint. The ratio of birefringence of the fused layer and the unfused strap material determined by a polarizing microscope, is between 0.08 and 0.15, in the case of nylon 6-6, and between 0.2 and 0.45 for polypropylene.
