Abstract

1532952 Seaming non-metallic sheet material METAL BOX Ltd 1 Oct 1975 [5 July 1974] 29812/74 Heading B5K Apparatus for welding a first plastics material 13 under tension to a second plastics material 12 comprises an electrically heatable welding head mounted on a frame 35 movable towards and away from the material 13, and pusher members 45 comprising generally wedge-shaped elastomeric members mounted one on each side of the welding head on inclined faces 55 of the frame 35 and arranged so that, in use, as the frame 35 approaches the material 13, they contact the material 13 and thereafter, by relative movement in contact with the material 13, generate mutually convergent forces so as to locally remove or substantially reduce tension in the material 13 where welding is to take place. As shown, the apparatus attaches a labelretaining transparent plastics sleeve 13 of low density polyethylene to a wall 12 of a plastics container 10 blow-moulded from high density polyethylene. The E-section frame 35 has limbs 37, 38 in the grooves between which bars 40 are slidable on rods 47 and are urged outwardly by compression springs 46. The members 45 comprise trapezium-section facings on inclined faces 55 of the bars 40. A resistance heating wire 26 is mounted on the limb 37. The frame 35 is secured to the piston rod 33 of a pneumatic or hydraulic ram 17. In use, containers 10, each with a sleeve 13 positioned therearound, are fed intermittently by a conveyer belt to a position at which two of the welding apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2 are transversely aligned and the frames 35 are advanced by the ram 17 to engage transversely opposed side edges of the successive containers. In a modification (not shown), the limbs 38 of the frame 35 are omitted and the bars 40 are rigidly connected by a member arranged to move in a slot formed in the limb 37. The apparatus may be used to weld polyethylene to polyethylene or polypropylene without an additional adhesive but if a polyolefin is to be welded to polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride, a hot melt or thermoplastic adhesive is applied to the container before the sleeve is positioned thereon.
