Abstract

1,136,780. Change-speed control. KRAFTFAHRZEUGWERK ERNST GRUBE VEB. 8 Dec., 1966, No. 54902/66. Heading F2D. A control system for a vehicle transmission comprising main and auxiliary change-speed gear units comprises a relay with a coil connected directly to a switch, a first contact which, when the main gear is engaged, conditions a circuit for energizing a first electropneumatic valve for engaging the auxiliary gear, and a second contact which, when the main gear is in neutral, conditions a circuit for energizing a second electromagnetic valve for disengaging the auxiliary gear. In the arrangement shown with an overdrive unit 2 following the main gear unit 1, the coil 10 of the relay 9 is connected to a switch 4 on the gear change lever 3, and relay contacts 16, 20 are connected to solenoid valves 5, 6. The system also includes a shift operated switch 7 and cam 8, auxiliary manual switches 18, 23, a signal lamp 26, and a switch 28 operated by the clutch pedal 27. To bring in the overdrive with the main gear engaged, clutch pedal 27 is depressed to close switch 28 and earth valve 5, and auxiliary switch 18 is momentarily closed to operate valve 6 and engage the overdrive unit 2. At the same time switch 7 is operated by cam 8 to light signal lamp 26. To disengage overdrive without changing the ratio of the main gear the clutch pedal 27 is operated to close switch 28 and earth valve 6, and switch 23 is then operated. so that valve 5 cuts out the overdrive, and switch 7 is opened to extinguish the lamp 26. Upshift of the main gear with disengagement of overdrive may be effected by a normal gear change using the pedal 27 and hand lever 3. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the switch 4 is mounted on the main gear housing and actuated by a cam on the shaft of the direct drive train, so that overdrive can only be engaged when direct drive is operative.
