Abstract
1,144,752. Change-speed control. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 26 Jan., 1967 [9 Feb., 1966], No. 5774/66. Heading F2D. An overdrive transmission comprises a threeelement epicyclic gear unit 14, 16, 18 operated by a slidable positive clutch member 22 under the control of a snap-action gear change member 42, the member 22 being selectively engageable with dog elements 30, 40 carrying coned synchronizing rings 28, 36, and respectively integral with the gear casing 32 for locking the sun-wheel 16 to engage overdrive, and connected to the planet carrier 12 for coupling the latter to the sun-wheel to lock-up the gear for direct drive. The operating member 42 is movable between end positions 46, 47 under the action of a compression toggle spring 52 by an arm 56 which may be connected to a hand lever (58), Fig. 2 (not shown), or may be operated by a solenoid 68. The latter comprises two coils 70, 72 in series with limit switches 74, 76 and the terminals of a double-throw switch 78, the latter being connected to a switch 80 operable by the clutch pedal 84. In either end operating position the limit switch isolates the associated coil to prevent its being energized by movement of pedal 84 until switch 78 has been actuated for a gear change.
