Abstract

747,403. Change-speed gearing. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. June 16, 1954 [March 23, 1953], No. 7891/53. Class 80(2) In a motor-vehicle transmission system, an overdrive gear c behind the main gear box b is operated, automatically by a solenoid e controlled by a spring-loaded centrifugal switch k responsive to road speed, the speed at which the switch becomes effective to produce overdrive being variable both by the accelerator wand by the movement of the gear lever between its two top gear positions. The switch k completes a circuit through a relay coil g to close a switch f, with a hold-on switch i, for the solenoid e, the circuit also including a switch x which is closed whenever the gear lever is in either of its two gear positions. In Fig. 1, the loading spring m of the switch k is controlled through linkage p, q connected to one end of a lever r, the other end of which is connected to the accelerator w and which is pivoted between its ends on a lever s connected at v to the gear lever. In Fig. 2, the loading spring m is controlled solely by the accelerator w and the double switch k closes in succession two contacts j<SP>1</SP>, j, one or other of which is rendered effective by a two-way selector switch 3 connected to the gear lever.
