Abstract

1,136,632. Shaft seals. E. BELLOSIO. 11 Feb., 1966 [15 June, 1965], No. 6029/66. Heading F2B. A shaft seal comprises one or more teeth, each having a side 44 extending predominantly axially from a root disposed in a diametral plane to a tip 36 extending predominantly parallel to said plane, and a flank 40 which extends in a plane (or planes, as shown) oblique to the seal axis, the side, flank and corner between the tip and side all being exposed for disturbing the flow of liquid in the vicinity of the seal. A spring-pressed lip seal (18, Fig. 3, not shown) is force-fitted into the annular portion behind the teeth which serve to break the circular flow of liquid and reduce the liquid load on the lip seal. The lip seal of elastomeric material may be integral with the portion of the seal carrying the teeth, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown); in this embodiment, the two flanks of each tooth which extend obliquely, the tip and the corner edge between the tip and the side which faces inwardly towards the centre of the seal are all exposed as required. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the teeth are triangular and project axially and in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 (not shown), the teeth are suitable for both directions of shaft rotation and formed with arched elliptical flanks (121) and part-cylindrical sides (120), arched flanks (131) and part-cylindrical sides (130), and triangular flanks (151) and part-cylindrical sides (150) respectively.
