Abstract

1,136,194. Shielded containers for radioactive material. E. R. SQUIBB & SONS Inc. 4 April, 1967 [6 April, 1966], No. 15334/67. Heading B4Q. [Also in Division G6] A sterile column 3 containing radioactivity for medical use is housed in an opening 4 in a shielding container I closed by a shielding lid 2. The shielding material may be lead, a lead-antimony alloy iron, or a lead salt such as lead carbonate or lead sulphide embedded in plastic. Access to the column 3 is obtained by removing shielding plugs 8, 9 situated, respectively, in the base of the container 1 and in the lid 2. The column 3 is of glass or transparent plastic material and is closed by rubber stoppers 15, 16 pierceable by a hypodermic needle. A breather tube 19 connects the space in the lower end of the column to atmosphere and above the tube is a funnellike partition 22 supporting a perforated disc 24 of fritted glass. A filter pad 25 resting on the disc 24 supports a granulation 26 of a radioactivity - containing alumina. In use, radioactivity is introduced into the granulation 26 by piercing the stopper 15 with a hollow needle connected to a reservoir containing an aqueous solution of radioactive Mo<SP>99</SP> ammonium molybdate. Excess molybdenum and water are removed through a drainage needle piercing the stopper 16. To extract the radioactivity the column is eluted by injecting a non-pyrogenic isotonic saline solution through the stopper 15 by means of a hypodermic syringe, the eluate containing the radioactive material, i.e. the 99m isotope of technetium, collecting at the bottom of the column. When the eluate is to be used, it is removed by piercing the stopper 16 with a hypodermic needle. In a modification (Figs. 4, 5, not shown), there is no empty space at the lower end of the column and the eluate is removed whilst the column is being eluted.
