Abstract

1,135,991. Polymerization catalyst for diolefins. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 29 Nov., 1967, No. 54291/67. Addition to 992,189. Heading C3P. A polymerization catalyst for 2-alkyl substituted conjugated diolefins, is made by reacting TiCl 4 and an aluminium trialkyl etherate in a controlled manner so that the Al/Ti molar ratio is not at any time in excess of 1À2/1, while the Al/Ti molar ratio in the final catalyst is within the range of 0À6/1 to 0À8/1. In the example a catalyst in which the final Al/Ti molar ratio is 0À7, is obtained by adding controlled amounts of tri-n-propyl aluminium anisolate to TiCl 4 , in pentane at ambient temperature whilst ensuring that the Al/Ti molar ratio does not exceed 1À2/1. The catalyst is used to polymerize isoprene in pentane. Polyisoprene having a 95À7% cis 1,4-structure is obtained.
